I've done some more work on the commemorative gifts. I have about 8 confirmed people who want one, so I'm cranking them out when I have time..I like little projects like these. years ago I was into building birdhouses. I entered a contest in Georgia taking 2nd and third place...third place was for a "functional' birdhouse, and 2nd place for decorative...

Looks like some really nice work, Shutter.  Being an oil painter myself, I appreciate such creative work.  Will PM you soon.

Thanks, a lot of polyurethane. each one takes about two days to complete, just dry time between coats is taking up all the time. I sanded them while on the computer, or watching TV  C:-) the extra coats give it the deep dark tone I always look for with a wood finish...they will be ready to ship once the sand arrives...

The will also have a protective bottom...(green felt)

Come help find DB Cooper at TRUE INK.COM: THE MAN'S MAGAZINE ... with pig dinners, FBI files, True Ink’s horse racing crowdfunding project, a sailing trip to Cuba, and other ballyhoo ... as explained by Geoff Gray the consummate DB Cooper searcher:

"Gray said his documents are voluminous. But they don’t delve into the bureau’s investigations of specific suspects.

“This is the real stuff. These are internal reports and actual investigative documents that the bureau used to investigate the case,” Gray said. “There’s so many files and so much information I thought it would be helpful to have all this out there so people can find things I missed.”

How niche site True Ink is getting readers to pay for offline experiences
Lucia Moses
@lmoses
May 10, 2016

Last May, 77 adventure-seeking New Yorkers paid upwards of $90 to crowd onto a fishing boat and sail around Sheepshead Bay. Another crowd paid $40 a head at a Tribeca restaurant in November to sample pig hearts prepared five different ways.

While new media upstarts will grab viewers (and headlines) by the hundreds of thousands by exploding fruit on video, the niche publishing world offers a corollary to that model. The events were thrown by True Ink, a media company started a year ago by Geoffrey Gray, an author (“Skyjack: The Hunt for D.B. Cooper”) and journalist (New York, Sports Illustrated, Departures) with a focus on unsolved crimes.

Inspired by True: The Man’s Magazine, a pulp title from the 1930s, Gray wanted to create a place where stories about exotic topics like running with the bulls in Pamplona and making wineskins could thrive, unencumbered by the constraints of advertising-driven publishing and its need for scale, clicks and shares. He also saw that young people were tired of the virtual world and wanted unusual, real-life experiences.

â€śStorytelling has become so click-driven; it has to chase a digital ad model,” Gray said. “I thought, why not try to bring True back and take that old pulpy model and bring it to life with an experiential component?”

True Ink shares a kindred spirit with another startup, Atlas Obscura, which has promoted some of True Ink’s events; the two are talking about producing some events together. “The whole idea is that in age of platforms, small media companies like us and True Ink are trying to develop an intense relationship with people who feel like they are part of something,” said David Plotz, CEO of Atlas Obscura and the former editor of Slate.

Rather than rely on advertising, True Ink raises money from readers in the form of memberships (they’re called “Lucky Pieces”) and events like a sailing trip to Cuba (pictured) and the aforementioned pig dinner. It’s doing “experiential” branded content in the form of event sponsorships. For parties, it lined up Joseph Abboud, Koval whiskey and Crisloid, a maker of classic games like backgammon, for example. Eventually, Gray sees making money from branded products, e-commerce and other media like documentary-style shows and films inspired by True Ink’s content.

For its biggest project to date, True Ink is throwing a crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo to raise money to buy a racehorse that will be stabled on Long Island. People who donate at least $100 will get access to parties, trips and other events. Two weeks in, the campaign has raised nearly $23,000. Gray compared the campaign to adventure plays where the audience participates. “Instead of reading about a race horse and trainer, you’re part of it, so you have a connection to the story,” he said.

In a pop-up for True Ink’s horse racing crowdfunding project Gray has rounded up a handful of full- and part-timers including ex-Reuters reporter Colin McDonald and writer Jason Schwartzman to operate True Ink. Started in Gray’s home on the Lower East Side, it now operates out of borrowed space in a law firm in Midtown and in a former factory in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It’s gotten some angel funding and is about to seek seed funding.

Adria Jover, one of the angel investors and the founder of Glassful, a wine subscription service, said he was attracted to the company because of its “true, unique” style in contrast to the media companies that cater to a more passive readership. “I truly believe all the media giants out there, they will be very attracted to an initiative like True to include within their portfolio,” he said.

But for a new company just getting off the ground, making money from consumer events is hard. Plotz knows; Atlas Obscura has been at this for two years. Sponsors can help get an event to profitability, but they work on long lead times, want to work with people they know and be sure the event matches up with their goals, he said. If you forego sponsorships, you have to price the event low enough that it’ll be accessible to users who are (presumably) paying out of pocket. So keeping the company afloat will likely depend on a mix of revenue streams — beyond pig heart dinners.

Gray may be onto  something unique and potentially lucrative. It's all over the map theme wise, racehorse, fishing, Cuba trip, Cooper, etc but the True Magazine male adventure bonding theme worked once and it may find a place with the cash rich and socially starved guys who aren't fulfilled by social media and other digital substitutes for real life. Maybe he ought to buy a timed out but otherwise good looking Learjet. They go dirt cheap. Rent a hanger, put in a private bar, sell membership tokens. The jet won't fly but who cares. Go check out your jet, then head over to the stable to visit your "racehorse". Live large. Feel cool and connected for a modest expenditure.

Go Goeff.

Cooper colleagues:

Just talked to Shutter, the Tina Bar sand has arrived.  He is ready to mail you your commenorative gift that he himself created and crafted -- as a way to say thank you to all of you for your work, effort, and contribution to the case.  PM SHUTTER WITH YOUR MAILING ADDRESS AND HE WILL MAIL THE COMMEMORATIVE GIFT TO YOU.  From the pictures Shutter sent, the gift looks wonderful!

Also, Shutter informed me that he may be dealing with skin cancer.  He does not know the extent of the situation or what he's up against.  Keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he gets himself checked out.

Is everyone lined up over at GG's site waiting in line to get their piece of the pie of those once-confidential FBI files?  It's like a new store that opens up, everyone wants to go there....at least until the thrill wears off....I guess.  It's something new and different.....something we haven't had for a while...can't say as I blame anyone for wanting to do that.  They'll be back, hopefully to discuss any new insights they might have gotten from those files....although I'm wondering just how much will actually be new to the Cooper-ites who have been around for years.  We'll see.....

Maybe we ought to let Blevins, Knoss, and Jo back in to stir things up again.  All that vitriole back at the DZ, those were the good ol' days......

I've wondered that myself, and Airtwardo -- I always liked his input and expertise.  We've lost some folks over the years.  I never had a problem with Knoss, ever.  All the fuss over him, I just didn't see it.  Never ever had a discouraging word with the guy.  What about Amazon?  Was that her -- the very astute, bright, insightful lady from the Southeast whose comments were always on point and well researched?  I miss her too.  I've talked to Jo several times, she's got a good heart.  Never mean spirited, and she's definitely sticking to her story.  And Blevins, we converse via email quite often.  People will say what they will say, but I have no problem with Robert.  He's been a decent guy, our conversations are always respectful and cordial  -- and I have no problems with him, anymore.  If you recall, I lost my cool with him over at the DZ and got permanently banned.

I kinda miss the old Dropzone -- one thread, one window, only one road in.  It was more intimate and personal -- you really got to know people there, up close and personal.

We really do need something new -- new information, new evidence, anything -- something to kick start the investigation and discussion again. I think something will pop, some day, some time, sooner or later.

Bob Knoss was an interesting character.  He lives in Minnesota.  One time, Vicki and I IM'd him and asked if he'd like to meet, basically put a name to a face and so forth.    He definitely believes in his story and really isn't interested in any other.  Too bad. I would have liked to talk to him.  This is what he wrote back in July 2014:

"I see no value in meeting. Your pursuits are frivolous to date and Ms. Wilson's are tangential to Cooper. When you develop an interest in what really happened we can review the thought. If you want answers, talk to Nick O'Hara, Bill Rataczak, Richard McCoy, Florence, Ralph Himmelsbach, George Tenent, or Dave Haapala. There are many others involved, but NONE of them will give you the time of day. Jo Weber has an agenda for telling the story HER way and will lie or do anything to hide the real facts. She has gone mental, I think.

"No KC or any of the 2000 other suspects Blevins can drudge up for attention diversion, or you for that matter. I don't HAVE to guess. I don't HAVE to prove facts about some innocent person. I can report what actually happened because I am a witness to the entire Project from concept through cover-up. I fight the cover-up artists, story writers and mental cases every time I post. Some people are even victims of cruel parents, like Jammie Cooper, misled by his lying father. I can't fix it, but I can be sure that ONE story presented is factual.

"If you want to present facts, start with interviewing Tennet. He is the only one who has spoken correctly. Cossey talked to me freely, but after I advised Bruce of his openness, he was shot. Jo Weber has some correct information and a lot of gibberish. Everybody else will clam up tight. They took an oath of silence. They put me through 'Blue Bird' against my will and I have no legal need to remain silent according to my legal advisors. McCoy told me to tell the story, it was alright by him, since he had a new identity. O'Hara buried a corpse and called it Richard Floyd McCoy, Jr. Long live McCoy.

Bob"

waiting in line to get their piece of the pie of those once-confidential FBI files ?

Like waiting in line to get the first three words in the Bible then having to guess and evaluate the rest?

Is Gray milking people again in a charade?
