Children playing outside their home near Amboy found the chute's fabric protruding from the ground in an area where their father had been repairing a road, FBI agent Larry Carr said yesterday. They pulled it out as far as they could and cut the parachute's ropes with scissors.

The agent travelled to the property to look for a harness or other remains from the parachute, but the children were not home and the father was not sure exactly where they had found it.

The children had seen media coverage of the case, which was publicised by the FBI last autumn in an attempt to generate new leads on the unsolved hijacking, and they urged their father to call the agency.


They couldn't find a hill of garbage on there property?

Reportedly, a landowner near Amboy was grading a road and the blade snagged an edge of the parachute and pulled it from its decades-old hiding place.

Yup, lots of stories. Nothing definitive. Not even the location. One afternoon at Nick's Tavern, every single person I talked to about the chute gave me a different story and address to check-out.

How come we never see episodes like this at Investigate Discovery?

Kids are the hardest to keep quiet and yet nobody really knows where the location is. those who say they do end up being those who inject themselves into the story. the FBI didn't want Cossey to state it wasn't Cooper's chute to allow the story to cook and gain interest. that's my opinion of it..

Parachutes

Upon closer examination, it is clear that Flyjack has discovered compelling information concerning Hayden's parachutes. The one returned to him by the FBI seems to be different than the one inspected on the plane by the National Guard in Reno.

I'll start digging into that shortly.

The comments I made were specifically related to determining whether whether the rig left on the plane and the one given back to Hayden were the same.

A reason why the serial numbers may be different if from the same rig.

I don't know why they would want to open the rig found on the plane, but the amount of information they had on the pilot chute would not likely be on the packing card, so would likely only be gleaned by looking directly at it, which would require the rig to be opened. So when Hayden got his rig back, was it open?

If the rigs were different, and the FBI still had the one left on the plane, would anyone have necessarily seen it?

I was trying to give Bruce ideas on how to determine whether they were the same rig or not.

It was repacked twice from what I can recall..it was in the condition we see it at the museum..packed.

repacked in 1982 and 1986..

That appears to be the serial number. Like any product, there's a make, model and SN. Pioneer, 26' Conical, 226. And the DOM.

How many digits would depend on how many had been made. I once had a reserve that was B. Gargano & Co., Hobbit, SN 11.

Hayden could have had it repacked before giving it to the museum.

The picture of the rig in the museum is interesting - the ripcord seems to be on the left side, usually they are on the right. Either the photo is reversed, or perhaps that's the modification that Cossey spoke of, Maybe Hayden wanted it on the left.

Cossey mentions moving the ripcord..I want to contact the museum and try to get it opened. they were in lock down when I asked about it last year..I even have a packer close by to open the chute for inspection..

I remember when you were researching that - I think I suggested you find a rigger by contacting Skydive Kapowsin, which is the major dz in that area.

All those pictures show the handle on the left - that last one seems to indicate Hayden is more comfortable with the cross-pull.

Hayden doesn't seem too concerned with keeping his rig in date. These days reserves (and emergency rigs) are required to be repacked every 180 days, which was lengthened from 120 days a few years back. In Cooper's day it was probably  60 or 90 days. The pilot of 305 could get in trouble with the FAA for allowing Cooper to jump with an out of date rig, haha.

Hayden didn't like chutes at all...I think the name you posted is who I contacted..have to find the buried emails..don't remember his name at the moment..

Yes, it was Kapowsin..his name is Jeff..here is how he described the chute..

It was surplus military and hardly a luxury, it was also the time that real sport rigs starting to be built.  Jeff
