Could some of the particles be from a bomb that DBC had with him?

If I could, I'd bet on them being road flares. in the event the authorities didn't meet his demands, the charges would have been miniscule compared to carrying a real bomb.

April 12, 1965

FROM COMMERCIAL TO MILITARY— A Boeing 727 takes part in a test demonstrating its use as a military air drop assault transport. Here one of the simulated cargo loads leaves plane as it flies at low speed and altitude.

Newspaper pic..  looking for more on this event.

Looking close at the April 1965 727 drop test image..

It is a Boeing marked plane and there are no ventral stairs..

that appears to be N7001U which was the first 727 flown for testing and certification..NO, the stairs will not be attached when drops are being made..you would damage them with the first pallet dropped and jumps could not be made with them down either..they have to be removed and sheet metal covers the stationary stairs attached to the plane..

the stairs have to be removed with the way the military setup the back of the plane...the jumps are made by sliding down and out of the plane..the stairs are removed and sheet metal is covering the permanent portion of the stairs leading to the retractable stairs..the staircase could be a huge problem for the way the military configured the back of the plane...I'm not stating Cooper didn't jump from them...

The takeaway is..

In April 1965 it was demonstrated and exposed in the media that the 727 could air drop, takeoff, land and fly without the ventral stairs.

"Cooper" may have gained that knowledge as early as here or from 727 operations in SE Asia.

Flyjack, didn't you also find the short article from Flight Magazine, dated sometime in 1964, that stated the 727 had demonstrated flight during its certification testing with the aft stairs down?  That presumably also indicates both take off and landing with the stairs down.

That helps dissolve the contention it was all a 'deep dark secret' only a few orbiting the Pentagon knew.  ;)

I feels 'soooooh much better'! We have struggled with this secrecy MAXIM since 2007 when it was proclaimed!

The name of the pilot flying the 727 in that picture is probably public knowledge as well.

I have been researching the Zodiac Killer case and something of interest that I read was that they are saying with today's technology with DNA testing you can test hair without a root. I have read on here that the FBI has samples of Cooper's hair, I would love for them to test Cooper's hair for DNA and possibly use genealogy to try and finally solve this case. I know that FBI doesn't want to spend money on the Cooper case anymore but maybe somebody like Tom Colbert that wants to prove that his suspect was Cooper might.

Unless the disposable headrest cover was changed prior to flight, I'd wonder how they could be sure it we're Cooper's hairs and not from the passengers in the flights prior.
