Good stuff! I'd be interested to see what you turn up. I'm especially interested in what he was in prison for in the 80's. It's possible it was due to the 1980 charges, but the 1982 charges make that seem unlikely because if he were convicted on the 1980 charges then he wouldn't have been out of prison yet by 1982. Criminal system worked a lot faster back then. If he was indicted in 1980 for Fed charges, he'd have been convicted well before 1982. And Fed time is real time, so he would have almost certainly been in the can in 1982 if convicted of the 1980 charges. So I think it must have been for something else. I've pulled every string I have with my Federal Court connections to see what he was in prison for and can't find it.

I wasn't aware of the criminal activity, the imprisonment, the divorces, kids or all the wives before

So Braden is a more interesting character now...i.e. more than just his Vietnam/mercentary behavior

I included enough info to hopefully get the FBI to search on the trucking insurance fraud and maybe the conviction for federal prison

that's interesting. I was thinking the case should be in some online case or conviction record
do you have access to normal lawyer records search?
And you couldn't find it?

Okay here's some random speculation.

Braden planted what small amount of bills he had on Tena Bar, because he knew he was going to jail in 1980
He didn't want someone going thru his stuff while he was in the joint, and finding them, and leading to more jail time!

Or Braden confessed to the hijacking and hoped to get reduced sentence by pinning the hijacking on someone else.
He had the money as "proof"
The FBI investigated and discovered he was lying.
but they had the bills and didn't know what to do with them since it opened a can of worms. They suspected Braden but couldn't prove it and didn't want to try him and potentially have him get off even though they had bills.

The FBI manager just said "Make it go away"
So some FBI agents went out one night to Tena Bar, smoked some joints, and buried the bills.

I got my FBI FOIA response in regular mail

same boilerplate answer about "third party" request. He's dead so there shouldn't be a problem?

filed my appeal to FBI FOIA for Braden.

Here's his WWII registration card again.
on it he faked his date of birth ..Dec 13, 1925
but he also lied about his birth place? Says Wolfe Lake, Indiana

interesting his name was printed. Did Braden print that.
The rest of the card was cursive..
The card said  (print) on the place of residence, but cursive was there.

UPDATE TO POST
Mary Helen Decker was Ted Jr's real mother. She had been married to Ted Burdette Braden Sr. when she had Ted Jr.
So Ted Jr had a brother John E. Braden but then he had  a younger step brother Clifford Eugene Dearbaugh Jr. born in 1932.

She then married Clifford Eugene Dearbaugh Sr in 1930, so Ted Jr. would have been a baby?
So that Ted Jr kind of moved into the new family situation as a baby?

Ted was around 11-12 then. So it's interesting he went back to his father's name when he lied about his age and joined the Army for WWII.
The new step brother (younger) is listed also. Clifford E. Dearbaugh (Jr.)

His mom's obit Mary Dearbaugh, age 88 was in the North County Times, 27 Dec 1997 Page 20

the Ted Jr. in question was referenced as "Ted Braden of Pennsylvania"

There is a reference to a list of grandchildren including "Bruce Braden of Detroit"

would this be the son of Ted Jr's brother ? have to investigate who Bruce Braden of Detroit is.

Half of me is thinking "John E. Braden" is a mistake.
But then I don't know where the mother's obit reference to Bruce Braden as a grandchild, comes from (why would that be included if it was from a Ted Sr. future marriage after her?)

Oh, what were the names of Ted's kids with his first wife?
Maybe the grandson came from that marriage
UPDATE: yes. see Rosalind Lauer Robinson's obit below

So was Bruce Braden the son of Ted Braden Jr, with Rosalind Lauer as the mother?
(I thought they had more than one kid?)

Odd Ted is not mentioned in the memorial. He is linked as Family Member Spouse though.

Bingo. Found out why Ted Jr listed Wolfe Lake Indiana on his WWII registration card with the fake 1925 birth year.

Wolfe Lake, Indiana was were his dad was born (Wolf Lake actually) in 1907

His dad was a tool and die maker. evidently died in 1961
I forget the details of the clip-on tie from the hijack, what was the earliest date it could have been manufactured?
Could the clip-on tie have been inherited from his dad's tie collection after his dad's death?

Ted Jr is mentioned in the obit. (with Galveston, Tex?)

"According to a family member, Ted's stepfather was extremely strict with him, much more so than with his own (biological) son. He would spank Ted and was very short with him. He was also very emotionally cold to young Ted. (Ted's nickname was Corky)

Ted was a seasoned criminal. Ted was super qualified to do NORJAK. Ted needed money. Billy Waugh and many of Ted’s other military colleagues thought he was DBC. But where was he on Thanksgiving evening 1971? And how would you connect him to the tie particles? Such an appealing candidate. But nothing ties him to the plane.
