And to you, Shut.

I really appreciate your detailed updates. It really gives us a sense of what is really going on. Much more informative than the broadcasts and the too-vague generalities on TV.

The warnings are in place and the evacuations are in progress. all the tolls have been suspended..on a sad note, price gouging is happening all over, including Amazon for gods sake! I haven't seen any yet..I paid $2.83 a gallon, which is high, but not considered "gouging"

Lines at the gas stations are still long..food is disappearing fast. I'm all stocked up, no problems there. my concerns are the roofs. if this thing doesn't slow down we will have a lot of missing roofs. 175 gusting to 200 is going to eat away at the structures.

present time is calm, cloudy with a little breeze. very cool now, it was humid all day long.

I would like to thank all of the people who sent me messages over the last couple days...it helps a lot. I'm very drained. this is taking a toll on me. I've helped everyone I possibly could. I've had some trouble sleeping that's finally caught up to me so I think I'll go out like a light tonite...

The National Hurricane Center is showing that Irma will be a tropical storm all the way up into Tennessee, wow. we just need that miracle to move the storm out of our way, but I don't think that will happen.

I went to Publix supermarket and found lots of empty shelves. pet food, pretty much gone, water is history, and batteries are gone as well. can goods, missing, along with tape, boxes, plastic containers etc. looks like they had a going out of business sale. lots of gas stations are down, but I also seen a lot of tankers heading out, or at the stations. I had to switch trucks, the battery died on me this morning. can't catch a break..

Just another venting post...

Vent away.

It's therapeutic for me not to be the one ranting for a change...

I was just talking to my neighbor, who is more prepared for stuff than I, and we were saying that we observe a striking difference between folks in Florida and Texas. We sense a much higher level of preparedness in Florida, coupled with a greater respect for Mother Nature. People in Florida have learned a lot more from their experiences with hurricanes than the people in Texas it seems.

Bottom Line: I salute you for your preparedness, and attitude towards everything and everybody affected by Irma.

Sounds like it is time for Tequila and kicking back.

was just sitting here getting ready to hit the hay when the phone went off with an alert, there it goes again...hurricane warnings have now been issued..we were under a watch but that didn't last too long.

Texas is a little bit different since they don't get many hurricanes..anyone near the coastline should be familiar with these storms. when they don't come around, memories fade. I still can't believe they didn't have mandatory evacuation on the coastline. I'll bet they will now! you have to remember that I've been doing this for years, so I'm more educated than most. that's why I try and teach people I interact with while dealing with hurricane shutters. I really don't do many of them anymore, but people still know who I am and that's why I get so many calls when a storm approaches. my scope of work is shipping canopies, railing, ornamental details, large slated louvers...basically, anything aluminum on the exterior of new commercial construction. I work with one contractor who deals in shutters, actually impact glass. he calls me when customers want to change things, or add windows that need protection for inspection. the job in the video was from him. they put new tile down, so I had to remove the shutters, wait till the tile was installed and the cut them down to fit.

Just looked at the hurricane center..it's coming right up the middle..it's not going to go away, it's coming..dropped down to 165. that's still extremely dangerous.

going to try and get some sleep and wake up early and deal with the final stages of hunkering down.

Have been watching it also - weather station, NASA, etc. That drop to 165mph is simply an eye wall reformation. Once that is accomplished (near Cuba) winds will pick back up to 180+, perhaps to 200mph before landfall in Florida a day later. Once it hits land then it may weaken (become a tropical storm). So stay tuned. Better yet GTF out of there!

It will take a lot of ground to down grade to a tropical storm. trust me, I have been battling the idea of getting out. I'll know enough in advance to leave if it comes down to that. tomorrow will be a critical moment for questions that need answers. out running it won't be a problem. leaving too late might present a problem. my truck is full of gas, enough to get far away from the storm, and the lines. I have my personal things in my truck, things that can't be replaced. I will know tomorrow whether to head for the hills.

Jupiter would be far enough away..I only have to move 100 miles to safety. probably less. hurricanes don't like land, if it comes up the middle it will start to fall apart, but strong ones take time and distance.

I understand your point, but the storm will not be here tomorrow, but will be close enough to take action if needed. if you wait till Saturday, you might have a problem. tomorrow is the "two minute warning"

I have a 97 year old uncle at Kerrville TX... he was ok but not answering the phone, so... we had no idea what was going on at Kerrville when Harvey landed. We came very close to dispatching a plane to get him if needed. His son finally answered. All was ok. Thank God! Our pilot was happy to get out of that assignment!!

How jammed are the roads?

I just read a "real-time" update from someone who left South Florida yesterday, could only make it to Orlando last night because of traffic, and this evening was still 30 miles south of Atlanta and the Interstate there was three lanes packed solid, bumper to bumper, and averaging 30 mph.

To me, evac is like mountain climbing - you have make it both up and down the mountain. Same with evac - you gotta get to your evac point. Close doesn't count in my book. Worst scenario is being stuck out in the open, like in lake country north of Orlando via I-75. I used to work in the horse industry there, so there might be an empty stable if you need a spot to hunker-down up there.

Would you even consider taking I-95 even it's a few miles shorter than I-75? It's so close to the ocean, relatively, but it is sure to be jammed. Have the state troopers opened up the southbound lanes and reversed them northwards, yet? Even with six lanes northbound, I think it will be crammed and very slow.

Why are you considering evac? You're far enough inland to be safe from the storm surge, correct? At least five miles? Next issue is wind. You've got a safe room, correct? So, even if the roof blows and everyone's siding in the neighborhood is ripping apart and blowing around, you'll still be safe even if it's too noisy to sleep, no?

Plus, you've got your mom and sis, no? If it was MY mother and sister, I'd be staying put and passing around handfuls of Xanax and having them read from the bible. They go to church everyday - receive communion, too. They're more Catholic than the Pope..., well maybe not Pope Francis. But that last Pope, wasshisname? Benedict. Definitely more than him.

I have a good friend and fellow prepper south of Kerrville, in the Barton Springs section of Austin. He said it never got any wetter than the PNW. "Just another rainy day," is how he put it.

My mom is 93 and very frail - but her mind (and tongue) are as sharp as a Schrade... I would never encourage her to evac unless she was in complete and eminent danger and she had people with her who could escort her to safety every step of the way. I feel that evacs are dicey propositions and need to be carefully considered, such what place is one evacuating to: Bathrooms and sanitation, food and water, personal safety, control of crazy people and predators, etc.

You mom and my uncle should get together!   They would keep us busy.   ;)  He flew B17 missions in WWII - was a navigator.
