Would a layperson in 1971 be able to get hold of these maps?  In 2018 I got mine online and on eBay.  What would it take in 1971?  An inside contact?

In 1971 anyone with a few dollars could buy these maps at just about any aviation flight operation or airport.  They were published by the USA Government Printing Office and the FAA mandated their use by US pilots for VFR and IFR flight operations.  Or you could buy subscriptions for the numerous VFR and IFR maps and IFR approach plates from the USA GPO.

For the IFR maps and approach plates, the Jeppesen Company, which is now owned by Boeing Aircraft, was the preferred choice of most airlines and IFR pilots and those publications contained the same information as the GPO publications but in a slightly different format.  But there was absolutely nothing secret about them and they were intended to be widely distributed.

As I have previously posted, the 1971 IFR charts that the hijacked airliner flight crew would have been using (or their Jeppesen equivalent) are available on Sluggo's web page as well as at the Washington State History Museum site.

Just exactly what kinds of maps did you get online in 2018 and on eBay?

Okay.  That leaves Fred Poynter's group at WSHM with the disks of the 1971 IFR maps.  Those disks were obtained through the National Archives and Records Administration and involved a lot of expense and frustrations with one of their sub-contractors.

Only posting this link because you mentioned maps and as that has come up today elsewhere regarding the case,  it was a weird coincidence - was searching FB and stumbled across this book claiming Cooper was someone named Richard Kavanaugh. The first post shows a bunch of maps that were in the guy's possession. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login  I had never heard of the guy before, but I do notice who one of the commentators on one of her posts was. I recall Alice the FA saying Cooper asked for maps, though many have assumed the maps were delivered for the pilots, not Cooper, and IDK if anyone else mentioned him requesting maps.

I don't believe there is any documentation of Cooper asking for maps.  However, the pilots definitely needed additional maps and approach plates since they were going to be departing from their usual routes and would not normally be carrying maps or approach plates for areas that were very far from their customary routes.

I don't believe there is any documentation of Cooper asking for maps.  However, the pilots definitely needed additional maps and approach plates since they were going to be departing from their usual routes and would not normally be carrying maps or approach plates for areas that were very far from their customary routes.

Maybe Cooper was asking for maps - for the pilots! Knew they would need them ?

I've definitely read somewhere that Cooper asked for maps, maybe in Martin's book, maybe in the scribbled crew notes (also in Martin's book), possibly in another book or in a 302.

How do you know. You arent/weren't even familiar with the documents.

Why not just say: 'Hancock never existed' !   :D   Robert you are just blowing smoke again. It's obvious you haven;t read the material on Hancock. Hancock had a number of direct interactions with Cooper. She interrogated him. She observed him directly for hours . . .

The 302 is a report citing the interview. They are almost verbatim. 

What color was Hancock's wig?  :rofl:

*One possibility is that Hancock or somebody is confused about who wanted maps, why, and when. Nobody else reported that Cooper wanted maps, so this could be a mistake or a confusion. We know the pilots did want maps and got them. There are lots of options here, but to say Hancock never existed is stretch way too farm which is your usual extreme approach . . .

Silly Georger, here you go again!  Why don't you just say that you were there and know everything that was said or not said. 

What is the basis of your pronouncement about what I am familiar with or not familiar with?  You don't have a basis and are just trying to butter up your over inflated ego.

Its in a 302 Flyjack posted part of. It's verbatim from Alice Hancock's interview. 

Hancock's interview states:

" Hancock stated that the subject made his demands known in this order:
1)   He wanted the money brought on board first.
2)   He wanted (passengers) off the aircraft after the money was on board.
3)   He wanted parachutes and four crew meals.
4)   He wanted the plane completely refueled.
5)   He wanted maps. "

Regardless of what is in Hancock's 302 interview, and it should be noted that she had very little contact with Cooper if any at all, Cooper would have to specify what maps he wanted.  Just asking for "maps" is meaningless.

And Cooper asking for specific maps would indicate where he wanted to go.  Cooper never mentioned going anywhere except to Mexico and that was probably just a ruse.  All available evidence indicates Cooper planned to jump somewhere near Seattle.

Just because something appears in a 302 doesn't mean that it is accurate.
