Betelgeuse alert! Not kidding.

The brightest star in the constellation of Orion, top left reddish star, has plummeted in brightness to its lowest luminosity ever. This star which has always been very bright going back into history, is a variable but what is happening now is unprecedented in recorded times. Some people think this could be the precursor to the star collapsing into its atomic core and a Nova resulting ? Stay tuned.  See:  You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Google 'Betelgeuse' for other alerts and commentary. Go out and take a look tonight before Orion sets wherever you are at  . . .

What were 888 people doing online here at one time today?

Has this site been hacked?

888? That's a very good luck number in China. I only see 8 guests and 3 users.

Look about three lines further down and below the dotted line.  It reads as follows:

Most Online Today: 888.  Most Online Ever: 888 (Today At 12:06:45 PM).

Is this forum ending at the end of this week as per your previous posting here - after Mr. Ulis' "lobbying campaign" post?

I sense there is a lot of background chatter not to mention political maneuvering going on, by people who have a history of political machinating, which some forum members are not even privy to but affected by ?  >:D

We had a small one in Tennessee a couple of weeks ago. There were unconfirmed reports of a few lawn chairs being knocked over. Anyway, I missed it as I was in Texas.

Hopefully the one in Florida was as uneventful!

Since I live in an active seismic zone, I'm a tad sensitive to the rumblings beneath me. Also, I live next to an active artillery range, aka Fort Lewis, aka JBLM, which might be known to y'all as the home base of them fighter jets that tailed Danny Boy a few years back, as in McChord Air Field. So, I feel things almost nightly.

We here live a few miles east of the Cascadian Subduction Zone, which slips every 350 years, on average. When it goes, it goes big - a minimum of an 8.0. Last one was January 1699, I believe, based upon the Imperial Records of the Court of Japan, which noted a huge but mysterious tsunami, courtesy of our earthquake. So, we're a bit overdue. The Cascadian has slipped a few dozen times in the current geological epoch.

Rule of thumb - if the shaking lasts four minutes, that's an 8.0. But five-six minutes puts you in the 9-10 range. So far, the worst I've seen is a couple of minutes - a 7.2 back about 15 years ago, known as the Nisqually Quake.

We have drills every year to deal with these possibilities. If and when we get the Big One, everything west of I-5 is toast. Seattle and Tacoma will survive, but will be uninhabitable. Authorities are estimating that the Cascadian quake will destroy at least half of all building stock from Portland to Vancouver, BC, including hospitals, police stations, firehouses, etc. All infrastructure will be rendered useless, such as fuel pipelines, sewage, water lines, etc. All roads will be impassable due to the collapse of bridges and over-passes, etc.

Rebuilding the Pacific Northwest to anything close to modern standards is estimated to take at least 20-30 years, depending on the availability of resources from outside the area, such as you folks in Florida, Iowa, and Tennessee. So please keep paying your taxes down there, and we all up here thank you, in advance.

But we'll have some great stories to tell when we show up to visit!

Shutter is ok - just got an email from him!  A lot of people I grew up with (former classmates) winter in FL. The reunion board lit up yesterday with EARTHQUAKE IN FLORIDA - BUILDINGS SHAKING IN MIAMI! I gather it turned out more of a scare than any real damage or injuries ... thank God!  :chr2:

News from Bryan Woodruff -

Dona Elliott's son, Bryan, and the current keeper of the Ariel Tavern, just sent me an email announcing that he is struggling with serious health issues. He's been dealing with a severe case of pneumonia all winter, and is still mostly bed-ridden it sounds like.

This would be a perfect place to hang-out with Tom and talk dinosaurs. I've been to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, and it is a lovely gathering. Mostly small-scale, so folks are available to talk. But it's vast and sprawling. There is a lot there. Lots to see.

Speaking of Tucson, I just talked to my NY Ex. She's in Tucson visiting her brother, but she's going to the ballet tonight with her sister in law. Some day I'd like to hangout down there for spring training. Everything's moved to Phoenix, though. Nobody's in Tucson any more, I hear. Maybe Florida and the Yankees. I'm craving palm trees and warm weather, too. Though it's 56 degrees here in Cooper Country. Just set a record - 31 days of rain in January. Woo-hoo. My previous personal best had been 22 straight days of rain, in February.
