By the way, File #44 was released a few days ago...I haven't seen any mention of this fact yet, so I'm mentioning it now.

Frankly I didn't find this batch of any real interest. Nonetheless, Cheers!

For Those With Colds and Flu: TV Suggestions

To those of us sniffling, coughing, hacking, and otherwise dealing with illnesses, may I suggest a few good movies and TV shows that I've enjoyed during my past two weeks laid up.

I get the medium level Netflix package for 12 bucks a month. Hulu is $15, and Amazon 10 and change, but it's the limited package. Here's what I recommend:

1. The Irishman - Netflix. It's the epic, 3.5 hour long, tale of a hit man who worked for a variety of Mafioso and related folks like Jimmy Hoffa. Exhausting, but good.

2. The Two Popes - Netflix. This is a surprise treat. Excellent movie about the transfer of power from Pope Benedict to Francis. Fascinating, moving, and a great exploration of the dynamics at work inside the Catholic Church. I wept at the end; it was that good a movie.

3. Killing Eve - Hulu. A charming, yet gripping, tale of an MI 6 agent and a freelance assassin who fall in love with each other while one is causing havoc in Europe and the other tries to stop her. Sandra Oh, as Eve, won an Emmy. Her lover, Villanelle, played by Judy Comer, is Oh's equal.

4. Occupied, Season Three - Netflix. This is one of the best written, most fantastically creative and intelligent TV shows ever. It is a Norwegian TV series that takes place in the near future - 2030-2034 or so. It follows the political, social, economic and military impacts as Norway seeks to confront rising sea levels in northern Europe due to climate change. In response to devastating shoreline and maritime destruction, such as loss of fisheries and coastal cities, Norway stops all production of oil and natural gas production at its wells in the North Sea. This triggers profound responses from the EU, who are then subjected to intense economic and public pressures by the then 500 million folks who live in Europe. The EU convinces Russia to stage a bloodless coup in Norway, take over the oil fields, and restore production. Season 1 is that story. Season 2 is the rebellion within Norway as freedom fighters try to throw out the Russkies without any EU, NATO, or US support. The freedom fighters lose, but everyone in Norway has taken a side - whom to ally with, whom to trust, whom to fight, etc. The shifting alliances are intense and tragic. Season 3 just came out January 1, and it shows all the backroom deals energy suppliers engage to insure continued relative economic prosperity and political stability while Norway is gripped by attacks against collaborators, profiteers, Russian oil workers, etc. Until the Green Party hackers get going and sabotage the energy grids of western Europe.

5. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee - Netflix. The 6th season - and its best season - has just come out of this, Jerry Seinfeld's quirky but fascinating series of interviews with the leading comics of our day, such as Eddie Murphy, Kate McKinnon, Tracey Morgan and Ellen DeGeneres. Insightful, heartfelt, light-hearted, and very educational about the art of making people laugh. Each show is about 20 minutes and is a sweet cup of java for the mind.

6. Hitler's Last Stand - Hulu. This six-part series covers pivotal battles of the western allies attack on Nazi Germany. Each episode is superbly researched and offers keen insights to the sacrifices and challenges each side faced. The last episode is the kicker - the Battle of Itter Castle in northern Austria, the only known battle of WW II where US armored personnel and their tanks joined forces with regular German Wehrmacht infantry to defend prisoners of war against their extermination by 150 SS fanatics. This battle took place in the Alps five days after Hitler's death and two days before Germany's surrender.

7. Madam Secretary - Amazon. Season 6.
The last season of this sweet, smart, and satisfying political drama culminates in M-Sec's becoming the first woman president of the United States. Not as good at times as Seasons 1-5, which were Rock Solid, but the crew finds its way by the end. I wept saying goodbye to some really stellar characters.

I watched "The Irishman" a couple of weeks ago. Great movie. Can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie this much.

Allow me to add another to the list if I may. I watched a documentary (I love documentaries) last week titled "Long Time Coming". As a baseball fan, I thought I would enjoy it. It's about a black little league team in 1955 that wants to play for the opportunity to go to the little league world series. Problem is, no one wanted to play them because they were black. Teams would forfeit, to keep from having to play them. One team did finally play them and this documentary catches up with members of both teams. Very interesting movie that is about more than just baseball. Watch it, let me know what you think.

The Irishman got mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed it and will likely watch it again.  For the Netflix users, check out The Spy, about an Israeli deep cover agent in Syria in the 1960's.  Based on a true story. Some of you guys here may actually remember it happening.  It's only 6 episodes, so easily digestible.

I believe that Israeli spy was eventually discovered and hanged.

Yup, "The Spy" is great. It's the true story of Eli Cohen.

Although he was outed and eventually hanged, in Israel Cohen is considered to be a true hero and their greatest intelligence agent of all time. He penetrated to the highest levels of the Syrian regime - before Assad and the current civil war, and Isis - and provided Israel with critical intell for years, including top-notch stuff leading up to the 7-Day War.

BTW, "Long Time Coming," Parrot's fave, is streaming on Hulu as part of their regular package. I'll be watching it tonight.

Like Parrot, I LOVE baseball movies. "Field of Dreams" was life changing for me. In fact, I have visited the ball field in Dyersville, Iowa. Further, I got a hit and scored a run in a pick-up game. It's my understanding that most days there is a game that evolves if you just wait long enough. Gloves, bats, etc. are all provided. Just show up.

Every year there is a special game that features major leaguers. Most, if not all, are retired. Reggie Jackson was there the summer before I showed up. The place gets packed, and special bleachers have to be set up.

I wonder if Bill Murray has come to the Field. He loves baseball and is a part-owner of the River Rats, I believe, the Charleston, SC minor league team.

I think I watched "Long Time Coming" on Amazon. I'll have to check that field out some time when I'm in Iowa. I go there from time to time.

I saw "Long Time Coming" tonight. Good movie. However, it's more about overcoming racial strife than baseball. The movie is about a black Little League team from Pensacola - the JC All Stars - playing a white Little League team in Orlando after something like 60 white teams forfeited their games to the JC's. It was the first Little League game between black and white players in the south. The last third of the movie is priceless as the two teams have a reunion game after 62 years.... Whew.

FLYJACK sulks and opines:

The Cooper case is unique, hard facts are few and it is a very old case. The farther you get from the incident the more outside the box thinking is required to budge it. There is very little new evidence to emerge. We get some FBI files but they have had that info and not solved it. Sticking strictly to the facts is more important closer to the event. At 50 years out that didn't work, as time passes we need to explore increasingly speculative theories. There is a reason this wasn't solved in 71/72.  The FBI didn't publicly solve it or prosecute with all the info they have, either they didn't have a case or they did and it was rejected.

New wine into old skins.  Old skins into new wine. Energy drinks are the solution!  Houston we have a problem!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: We have everything we need right now to solve the case. We have enough pieces of the puzzle to crack the riddle. We are simply faced with a mental challenge requiring a Sherlock Holmes approach.

I believe the key to solving the DB Cooper riddle involves putting yourself into DB Cooper's mind, then seeing what evolves. Here's an example:

1) We know DB Cooper left his tie and alligator tie clip on the jet. In all likelihood this was done accidentally, after all, the guy was anal about collecting all evidence.

OK, with that in mind, how do you think DBC responded when he realized he left the tie and tie clip behind?

I assume he was very concerned that the authorities may be able to garner a fingerprint from the tie or tie clip or in some other manner figure out who the owner of the tie and tie clip is.

In my mind, DBC probably decided to lay low for quite awhile after the skyjacking, in part, because of this. In other words, I highly doubt he spent any of the money and I highly doubt that he had it hiding in his closet or anywhere near him, just in case the authorities came knocking at his door.

2) I'd being willing to wager that DB Cooper read everything he could about the skyjack in the newspapers immediately after the event. After all, he would want to know what the authorities were thinking, where they were searching, etc.

OK, so what if you're Sheridan Peterson and you're DB Cooper and you read the next day in a United Press International article that the authorities are looking for a former smokejumper? Additionally, what if you're Sheridan Peterson and you're DB Cooper and you read that Linn Emerick--a guy that you know personally from skydiving at Issaquah Sky Sports years earlier--states that he thinks he knows who DBC is based upon the sketch and that this person is someone who used to skydive at Issaquah Sky Sports?

May I suggest that in this case Sheridan--if he actually was DBC--was probably petrified and very concerned that the authorities were hot on his trail. Again, with this in mind you would think the Sheridan would distance himself from the money, and frankly the country, for quite awhile. In other words, his thoughts and actions would be shaped by what he considers a threat.

Where all of this leads and the story it tells is all part of solving the riddle. There are plenty such examples in this case and plenty such paths that we can take as we attempt to figure out what happened and why. Remember, a mind is a beautiful thing to waste.
Some men see things as they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?
