The plane Richard Russell stole from Sea-Tac this weekend has captured a lot of attention. In a few ways it is reminiscent of DB Cooper - same airport, same ground issues with planes tied up, and lots of Fb people cheering Russell on for being a ballsy guy.

Here is a MN report on what I've learned so far on how Russell got in the air, and how he might have learned to do what he did, such as barrel rolls.

Shut was a big help on that article, and the piece includes Shut's 13-minute sim on how to start and begin the taxi roll on a 727. Very impressive. It gives an idea on what Russell had to do to get airborne.

Shut's audio link above gives a hodge-podge of radio transmissions from the 70-minutes Russell was airborne. The last few sentences reveal he was down to 760 pounds of fuel, which I consider critically low.

". . . lots of FB people cheering Russell on for being a ballsy guy" and those people saying that he liked to do "really cool things", such as killing himself, are people Russell probably would have met if he had been confined to a lunatic asylum.

Remote control of commercial aircraft

There is a robust discussion emerging at the Mountain News on the subject of remote control of planes like Richard Russell's Q400. If this kind of thing interests you, c'mon by.

Wow, that was somthin'!  I am blown away by this most bizarre happening!  I thought of the Cooper case and some of the similarities to the case as I was listening to this incident.  Big news here, and around the world too....I'm not more than 35 minutes away from Steilacoom, the little town across the bay from McNeil, Ketron, and Anderson Islands.  Thanks for the posts and radio transmission dialogue.  Incredible!

Meyer

You think it hits close to home for you?  I work for that airline.  It was all we talked about today.

So what do you think, Mark? Did Russell teach himself EVERYTHING on purchased simulators and practiced at home?

What are people saying at Horizon? Have you heard all the crazy Q Anon stuff about a secret missile base on Ketron Island?

What does a tow team driver know about the cockpit of a Q400? Does he drive it? Turn on the lights and hydraulic systems? Etc.

What's your view on a remote controlled crash?

Bruce, could you just stick to facts for once?  I realize you have an aversion to facts when you think you can generate more traffic for MN, but there is simply nothing to suggest that this airliner was remotely controlled or was capable of being remotely controlled.

And a secret missile base on an island that has a land area of only a few acres?  Fer's gods sake, Bruce get a grip on your wild eyed imagination!

Honestly, I can't say I know any more than anyone else.  Most of my information came from the media.

I don't work at the airport, and I didn't know Richard Russell.   We got an alert a little before the media got it (not much, a few minutes).   Honestly, my first thoughts were a 9-11 type situation.  Then, if not that, were there passengers aboard.  Just scary stuff.

He was authorized to move a plane -- which I assume means he could drive it.  Once he got close to a runway, I assume a simulator would be enough to get him to take off.

There are so many rules to keep everything safe, and I still don't know what could have been done.  The area was secure.  He was allowed to be there and enter the plane.

So, I don't know.  Even though I never met him, a company is like a family and it feels like losing one of your own.

Like I’ve mention many times before..... I live in Portland for over 55 years and delivered mail for 28 years. If anyone has any questions about locations in Portland back in the day, feel free to ask me !

Thanks Kermit, but this is an aviation chart...don't think you delivered the mail at 10,000 feet  O0

I was wondering what happened to Hominid so I emailed him..he replied saying he has been having health issues but was waiting on a sectional chart of Portland from 1971..that's what provoked me to look for one myself..not sure if he will be returning anytime soon..hope he gets well...
