Colbert is a dogged investigator. I have spoken with him and like him.

I find Rackstraw a totally fascinating character. His age is a significant barrier to me seeing him as a viable DBC candidate, but he sure had all the necessary skills and a prior history of aviation crime. Parachutist, pilot, thief, explosives expert too.

Rackstraw saw the skies as fertile grounds for stealing money. Few do.

Colbert's book is a great read even if you don't think Rackstraw was DBC. This guy was six sigma out on sociopathy. I can understand his beef though. After risking his life in Vietnam and being decorated for heroism, he is dishonorably discharged for having lied about being a college graduate. That seems a grossly disproportionate punishment.

Colbert's book, though, is a GREAT read. It'll make a GREAT TV show.

Hard for me to think of it as 'great', if Rackstraw wasn't Cooper.... Maybe a 'entertaining' read would be more appropriate... as if Rackstraw isn't Cooper, then the book would have done a disservice to the solve.

I digress..... I thought there was no chance Rackstraw or Peterson, could have been Cooper, due to the glaring blue eyes... the dark brown eyes were a big identifier for me.... that is, until someone posted recently here how when in the 70s the FBI infiltrated some Native American thing with a guy and had him wear brown contacts to appear indian....   this makes me believe more and more, that this was, a govt inside covert job by the FBI or CIA.

My 2¢: If Cooper wore colored contacts, why bother with sunglasses?  Wouldn't he want everyone to see his fake eye color?  Also, contact lenses are very bothersome if you aren't used to them, lots of blinking and watering.  Why not go with something easier, wig, mustache, hat, facial hair (it was the '70s)?

Hats off to Colbert. His dogged and expensive legal pursuit of FBI FOIA data will benefit everyone in the Vortex.

Ponder this attached FBI report which is part of the Cooper stuff Colbert received. All sorts of references to "Wounded Knee". AIM operative connection? Brown contacts?

One of the first AIM people to suspect that Douglass Durham was some sort of government agent was Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, the young Micmac woman from Shubencadie, Nova Scotia.
During Doug Durham's brief visit to Wounded Knee, certain AIM women, Aquash among them, had noticed that this "one-fourth Chipewa" in headband, beaded belt buckle, and turquoise jewelry was dyeing his hair black.

...taken from Wasi'chu - The Continuing Indian Wars
by Bruce Johansen and Roberto Maestres

Another rather inept attempt to reinforce the "savage" stereotype was directed not within police circles but to the American public...This was a report on AIM byt the Internal Security Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committe. The only witness to appear before the committee when it met April 6, 1976, was Douglass Fran Durham, a former FBI-paid operative who had infiltrated the American Indian Movemen in 1973.

In March 1975, Durham, who was so trusted that he was appointed AIM's head of security during the 1974 Wounded Knee trials in St. Paul, was confronted with evidence that he was an informer. He confessed, and was simply ousted.

Durham Update (provided by Paula Giese)
Durham was/is Army Intelligence, as well as his sort of "cover" as FBI. He resettled in a suburb of Dallas, TX (where he still lives). For a time, he infiltrated groups of Chicano people and attempted to infiltrate liberation groups (of Maya) S. of the border. I had obtained and published (in Akwesasne Notes and AIM pamphlets) enough pix of him that he was apparently recognized.
Durham's background--he was a minor mafioso, involved in drug and arms smuggling, using Army planes
(which he also used for AIM flights--included running a number of illegal gambling establishments in Iowa.

During his Army career preceding his infiltration of AIM at Wounded Knee (he went in under Army auspices, and took part in fake interviews which were really military interrogations) he was known as a disguise expert, and gave classes in that, in demolition, and in "infiltration, ex-filtration [getting out again afterwards]." This was in connection with an unsuccessful U.S./Gusano invasion of Cuba in the early '60's.

Anyone living in Dallas may obtain a current address/phone (his number is unlisted) from the Polk City Directory, at the main library. Up until 2 years ago, Durham kept the "key" odd spelling of his first name as "Douglass" making him easier to ID on directory listings, but about a year ago, he dropped the second S. His middle name is "Frank." He was born in 1937, is approximately 6'2", used to be rather stocky-built with something of a pot-belly. He used colored contact lenses and died what appears (from early family photos) to have been brown hair, black. Sometimes he wore varieties of wigs, including a blond crew-cut wig (in LA). Durham was also a pilot.

Douglass Frank Durham, 66, of Las Vegas, died Feb. 22, 2004. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, 1956-1959.

1973: FBI undercover used brown contact lenses, AIM infiltration [In reply to]
According to this book, in 1973, the FBI hired Douglas Durham to infiltrate the American Indian Movement (AIM) at Wounded Knee.
This was around the time when AIM occupied Wounded Knee and the US invaded and then had trials. (Russell Means, Dennis Banks, Leonard Peltier etc)

Douglas Durham was a member of CIA SF team in the late 1950s and early 1960's. He worked with the US-supported Cubans on the Bay of Pigs in 1961.

He was whacked for other reasons (shrink called him a violent schizophrenic) and did various crimes.

Says he dyed his hair black (old family photos show brown hair?) and wore brown contact lens, pretending to be part Chippewa. (Durham was non-native).

The issue of Douglas Durham being paid by FBI or CIA to infiltrate AIM is well established elsewhere.

Drug Wars: The Political Economy of Narcotics
by Curtis Marez

# Paperback: 384 pages
# Publisher: University of Minnesota Press (April 2004)

His full name was Douglas Frank Durham
Apparently earned $20k from FBI.

There's a lot of dirty laundry around Durham and what happened with AIM and the FBI back then, and how many people got killed where.

I say: "Contacts are a little painful to a non-wearer and DB needed his eyes to be working well for the remainder of the caper, So once he established his false eye color (up close with the Flight Attendant) then the cosmetic "Brown" contacts could be removed and just wear the sun glasses, which he did. The colored contacts worked quite well and fooled the FBI."

That sounds good.  Did he go through the airport, board the plane etc. with the contacts in?  Did he plan to wear the sunglasses knowingly or just happen to have them along?  Were there no passengers near enough to notice the removal and stowage of contact lenses nor see him put the sunglasses on?

Now we are on to the discrepancy of the Latin olive complexion and from the photos Peterson's white bread northern European Irish looking complexion, which I don't know how one could mistake, for olive...Tanned or not...
