The dynamite might of been real, but no blasting cap. all you need to do is get a look a like battery, toss some wires in with it and some made up sticks or road flares with no writing on one side bundle them up and throw it in a briefcase and watch how real it becomes.

I think you must stick with the testimony of what people saw and what Cooper did and not try to guess around this problem.

what they saw was 8 round stiks (red) with wires coming out of the sticks attached to a battery. actually, I believe they failed to notice if it was attached to the sticks.

Then what is all of their other testimony about?

Coon hunting?

Did they make everything else up? They must have. Did they know the day ad their names?

The battery as described does not sound like a typical flashlight battery. I never said Cooper was a coon hunter. I said the battery was similar to the ones that hunters would have been using at the time. How many flashlight batteries would be that long and that thick?

Here is a several fake bombs. I wouldn't want to see these in a briefcase on a plane!

Flashlight batteries are typically 6 volts. the round one's were 1.5.

If the bomb was real, Cooper used a specific type of blasting cap that only needed to be inserted into one stick (the blast would detonate the others). So if they went to all sticks, it was probably just for show.

However, if they were possibly mistaken, or if Cooper was a perfectionist, he may have rigged each stick. In this case, he'd need  to trigger it with an electrical charge.

The particles I found on the McCrone sheets were not simply palladium/aluminum. They all contained silicon, Palladium, Magnesium and Aluminum. If this was an electrical fuse, there may have been a very specific reason for it (pardon the length):

"The characteristic kindling temperature of an aluminum-palladium fuse is 650° C, approximately the melting point of aluminum. This invention also contemplates a fuse wherein the lowest melting element is an alloy whose composition is chosen to obtain the desired characteristic kindling temperature. In particular the eutectic alloy 70% Al 30% Mg has a melting temperature of 435° C, the aluminum alloys having lesser quantities of magnesium providing a continuous range of melting points from 660° C to 435° C. Also a bi-metallic fuse of palladium and magnesium is advantageously strongly exothermic in alloying. Thus fuses combining palladium with various of the aluminum-magnesium alloys offer a broad range of kindling temperatures."

Magnesium lowers the melting point of the wire. This can increase the compatibility with a weaker power source.

If that's the case, who would have knowledge and access to things like this?

Method and apparatus for detonating radio frequency sensitive blasting caps

A METHOD OF DETONATING ELECTRIC BLASTING CAPS CAPABLE OF HAVING CURRENT INDUCED THEREIN BY RADIO FREQUENCY ENERGY, SAID BLASTING CAPS BEING CONCEALED IN BAGGAGE AS AN ELEMENT OF A BOMB, COMPRISING THE STEPS OF ESTABLISHING AN EXPLOSION-PROOF LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING EXPOSURE CHAMBER; PROVIDING INSULATED RADIO FREQUENCY TRANSMITTING ANTENNAE WITHIN SAID CHAMBER ALONG THE LENGTH THEREOF; GENERATING A RADIO FREQUENCY SIGNAL OF CYCLICALLY VARYING FREQUENCY; CYCLING SAID RADIO SIGNAL TO SAID TRANSMITTING ANTENNAE; PASSING BAGGAGE SUSPECTED OF CONTAINING A BLASTING CAP THROUGH SAID EXPOSURE CHAMBER ADJACENT SAID ANTENNAE AND INSULATED FROM GROUND, AT A FIXED RATE OF TRAVEL SUCH THAT A GIVEN PIECE OF BAGGAGE REMAINS WITHIN SAID CHAMBER FOR AT LEAST ONE FULL CYCLE OF FREQUENCY VARIATION, AND INDUCING WITHIN A BLASTING CAP IF PRESENT A CURRENT SUFFICIENT TO DETONATE IT.

In recent years the nation has been shocked by a series of heinous crimes involving the explosion of bombs aboard commercial airliners. In almost all instances, the perpetrators of these dastardly crimes relied upon electrical detonation devices such as, for instance, electric blasting caps and electric squibs. These devices may be used with simple electric firing systems such as a battery energized circuit including a time delayed switch. Consequently, they are favored as compared to fuses which have to be ignited and burn until the high explosive is reached and detonated.

Detection of a concealed time bomb in passenger luggage has posed an almost insurmountable problem for the air lines. Although it has been done on occasion, the expedient of opening and examining every piece of luggage going aboard airplane is time consuming, arouses passenger antagonisrns and is extremely expensive. Yet, no suitable alternate has been discovered or utilized. There is need for an economical, fool-proof and quick system of inspecting luggage for hidden explosives not only to assure passenger safety but also to engender that feeling of psychological security so important to ones traveling aboard an airplane. Obviously, the same system may be used with other common carriers on land, sea or air as well as in the handling of merchandise of all types `by postal authorities and express companies. The emphasis in this discussion has been placed upon airlines' only because, in the past, they have been a favorite target for these warped personalities.

Consequently, it is an object of this invention to provide a method for detecting the presence of electrically detonated bombs in luggage, said method not requiring that the luggage be opened or visually inspected.

It is also an object of this invention to provide an apparatus which will enable the detection of concealed bombs, of a type utilizing electric squibs or electric blasting caps, in luggage or packages.

Another object of the invention is `to provide a method for detonating bombs, of a type utilizing electric squibs or electric blasting caps, in a controlled environment whereby damage to property will be minimized and hazard to life and limb eliminate Still another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus whereby concealed bombs may be safely exploded without risking human life.

Other objects of the invention include providing quick automatic means for inspecting luggage to determine the presence of hidden bombs therein, said means simultaneously detonating any such devices.

I was going to say that patented invention covering the use of simple freq swept RF to trigger hidden bombs traveling through explosion proof chambers prior to loading them was pretty naive until I saw the 1960 priority date.

Why would someone use a radio detonator manually? That's like using a mortar shell as a hand grenade.  Could it be that was all he had? If so, who would have access to detonators of the radio variety only? Or was he just full of shit?

Looking into radio freqs setting off explosives I found a case that they thought could of been set off by the radios. hey leaned more towards static electricity. a guy was killed digging a hole for dynamite. he had the detonator and dynamite in his hand when it exploded. he had a radio on him. a test was conducted seen below. they used the same radios and frequency.

Detonator: Electric MASTERDET manufactured by ICI

Mr. Lachance was carrying a Walkie-Talkie unit on his belt. The FM unit produced 5 W at a frequency of 165.030 MHz.
A lot of studies were conducted in order to get to know the transmission characteristics of the radio, the reception (antenna) characteristics of the electric detonator and the transmitted energy and frequency of the radio. The radio involved in the accident was used in the tests. The explosion had caused some minor damages to the radio unit and it had to be repaired. Fifty electric MASTERDET detonators were purchased. A simple method was used for the detonation. For safety precautions, the detonator cap was isolated in a blasting chamber. The detonators with 3 meter leg wires where extended and collapsed to form an antenna for radio reception. The radio, with recharged Ni Cad batteries, was activated to transmit in close proximity of the detonator or leg wires or in direct contact with the detonators or the leg wires. The geometry of the antenna was varied a number of times as well as the location of the transmitting radio. During the several days of trials, there was not one detonation. The MASTERDET detonators tested were frequently replaced to prevent the desensitising of the detonation mechanism.

When using electric blasting caps, avoid stray electric currents, such as those caused by power cables lying
on the ground, particularly when the ground is wet. Lightning is another source of possible premature detonation.
Radio frequency energy is a potential hazard, although the possibility of premature detonation due to this
source is remote, except for high-energy, long wavelength transmitters

There are a few technical errors in the article but you get the drift, megawatt power at super low frequencies.

Paul Montgomery, Retired electrical engineer. Founder-industral controls Co. Three volts at the lead ends will detonate a cap, but at least six volts is needed to be reliable. Electric caps are sometimes used by cavers to crack rocks when a tight spot in a cave needs to be enlarged.

1.5 volts is the type they believe Cooper had....

Alright, so then...

What type of person would behave as though using the radio was a hazard, but smoking cigarettes wasn't?  If we can find an area of expertise within demolition that marries these two thoughts, we can potentially boil down his background.

Or he was full of shit. Just to throw that in there again.

I believe he made the comment to try a slow information to the ground and add more fear. obviously, he had knowledge of this as well. did he read up or was he involved in this too? how many things can this guy do?
