From the same paper, it says the "cargo plane" tailing Cooper had parachutists aboard. I guess ready to jump after Cooper.

Sounds like it was the C-130. (too late)

Newspaper article from 11/27/71 repeating the assertion that Cossey packed three of the parachutes...i.e. not the training rig.

So it seems valid to say that no one knows who last packed the training rig, and how it was packed.
No reason for Cossey to be involved in packing training rig, I guess that's obvious.

Interesting.

This Salem, OR paper on 11/25/71 had some info from FBI agents that they were looking for Cooper around Portland,
with the idea that they thought he jumped around Portland. It was based on crew statements after they landed in Reno.

"An FBI spokesman says the speculation is based on the reaction of the plane when it passed over Portland"
..based on statements by the plane's crew.

any chance you can post photo of the whole article plus header ?

Michael Cooper was the reason the FBI called Missoula to check on a possible smokejumper that night.

Here's what went down, from Michael:

That's when Michael Cooper became entangled with D.B. Cooper.

"FBI agents were waiting for us in the bus and began to take roll of the passengers," Michael Cooper remembered. "The agent called D. Cooper and nobody answered. He called again and again nobody answered.

"Finally, I spoke up and said, `I am M. Cooper, Michael.' And the agent proceeded down the list alphabetically."

Later, Cooper realized that the agent had counted D. Cooper as among the passengers on board the bus, but not M. Cooper. When the roll call ended, only M. Cooper remained unaccounted for - the presumed hijacker.

Then he went home after FBI interviewed him.

Alone in his sister's house, Cooper could scarcely believe the events of the afternoon just past. Or what he saw when he switched on the television for the 10 o'clock news.

"The top news story, of course, was the hijacking," he said. "I was watching the footage, when one of those messages appeared along the bottom of the screen saying that the FBI was seeking Michael Cooper, a high school teacher from Missoula, Mont., in connection with the hijacking."

"This can't be true," Cooper said to himself. "And I just got up and went to bed. It was just too much for me to deal with."

The FBI called school administrators, including Don Harbaugh, then assistant principal at Sentinel. But Cooper had not told Harbaugh or principal Joe Roberts that he was leaving school early. Instead, he had asked another teacher to cover his last class.

Harbaugh remembers the late-night telephone call: "The FBI agent was most emphatic. He said they had positive identification that Mike Cooper had hijacked an airplane between Seattle and Port-land."

"My brain was reeling," Harbaugh said. "I remember thinking, `You mean Mike Cooper checked out of school early to hijack an airplane? Say what?' "

Belly-Mount Reserves
Investigators also discovered that in his rush to grab the rigs, the skydiver in the loft accidentally grabbed the drop zone’s dummy reserve, marked with a large “X” and red closing flaps. The DZ used the dummy reserve for students to practice deploying the reserve by scooping the canopy out of the container and throwing it in the air and over their heads.
Cossey explained, “For the dummy rig, I cut the reserve in half and sewed the panels together so that when the student threw it out, I could just fold it up and put it back in the container in half the time. That reserve was half the density of a regular reserve, and it was obvious to anyone with experience that it wasn’t a normal reserve.” Nonetheless, the regular reserve remained in the aircraft, and the dummy marked with an X was gone. Cossey personally thought Cooper removed the dummy reserve, stuffed the cash in its container and wore that on his chest as he jumped.

Compounding the mystery, Special Agent Larry Carr announced in 2008 that the cigarette butts were also missing.  In fact, Carr acknowledged that he never had possession of them – that inexplicably the cigarettes had been stored in the Las Vegas FO.  Why that happenstance occurred has never been explained.

here's the full headline and paper identification about the article talking about searching in Portland

I was thinking about Rataczak's comment about Cooper jumping before the suburbs of Portland, and whether the crew's first statements after landing could have been more accurate than any of the detailed "pressure bump" calculations.

At the very least, it seems to support the idea that the crew's initial reaction upon landing, was that it was somewhere near Portland.

Besides electronics, those tie particles point to dentistry specifically dental prosthetics.. primarily the ceramics but also Frit, CPTi and SS.

Fritting, CP Ti, SS, NaCl,

Cerium
Yttrium,

Strontium
Phosphorus

lead phosphate
Cadmium
Vanadium
Zinc
Barium Chloride
Tungsten
Tungsten Cobalt
FeTiPbCu
Iron cobalt
Antimony
Mercury sulfide
Bismuth
Tin Copper

Any semen on that tie?

Did Cooper wear that tie to bed and 24/7. What do you calucations show eh ?

L12650395A  1969  was in the flyjack list

It was sold 9/11/2012 on ebay for $4000

It's PCGS certified and encapsulated.

The pic below has the ebay listing (partial)
the bill is partially shown

I can't find any listing at ha.com, historical.ha.com or currency.ha.com for it
So maybe it was never auctioned by those folks

So it's a PCGS bill I don't have a hi-res photo for, yet.
Let me know if you find it.

PCGS certification apparently includes a photograph of the original note when encapsulated by PCGS

Anyone buying a note with PCGS certification, should ask to see the original paper certificate, and compare the picture of the bill in the certificate, to what you're buying.

The ebay seller should have the certificate, I would think.

attached is a certificate for L47621840A 1969

Been reading FBI and other law enforcement agency evidence collection and preservation protocols. The disposal or destruction of those cig butts is almost unbelievable. Violates every rule in the book. Could also affect other cases. How can an evidence custodian truthfully testify that the rules and procedures are uniformly followed?

Lucky break for Cooper. Almost as good as immunity or a pardon.

I think this 1962 patent has interesting knowledge.

luminescent phosphor layers on a crt, separated by non-luminescent layers.

What's interesting is the composition of the non-luminescent layers, and the "poisoning agents" (in addition to the phosphor layers)

There's 4 groups of materials: phosphors, activating agents for the phosphors, separator material, and "poisoning agents". Apparently up to 3 phosphor layers, and then a layer of aluminum

I'm not exactly why the phosphor layers are subjected to "poisoning". But the key thing is the use of additional odd elements to to do that. They mention salts there.

read the full patent to get the gist of it

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

By Way of example, this invention is described with reference to FIGS. 1-3 as embodied in luminescent screens which include three different phosphors, for example, red-emitting, green-emitting, and blue-emitting. However, the invention may instead be embodied in -screens harving a different number of diierent phosphors or of phosphors having different color emission characteristics. For example, the invention may be embodied in a two phosphor screen having orange and cyan emissions.
...
In preparing the screen 22, the first phosphor particles .of the layer 24 are preferably first surface-poisoned as in preparation of the multiple coated particles 8. These surface-poisoned particles are then deposited in a layer on a suitable substrate such as by settling, slurrying, dusting, or adsorption deposition. Alternatively, the phosphor particles forming the layer 24 may first be deposited on the substrate and then surface-poisoned. The second and third phosphor layers 26 and 30, and the second nonluminescent separator layer 28 are superimposed on the surface-poisoned particles of the base layer 24 in their appropriate order, such as by settling, slurrying, dusting, evaporating or adsorption deposition.

If desired, a suitable metal backing layer (not shown), such as aluminum, may be applied over the third phosphor layer 30 `by a process known in the art.

....................

This invention is not limited to any particular type or kind of phosphor, separator material, or poisoning agent. Any of the known phosphors from families such as the sulfides, oxides, selenides, phosphates, or silicates of metals such as zinc, cadmium, manganese, magnesium or calcium may be employed. Such materials may be activated by any of the known suitable activators such as silver, manganese, or copper.

Suitable nonluminescent separator materials include, for example, silica, titanium dioxide, mica, bentonite, talc, vanadium oxide and many other materials which are nonluminescent,
are compatible with a suitable method of deposition, and are capable of forming relatively compact, uniform layers.

The poisoning agent may be any material which will act to poison the particular phosphor being used and will not otherwise adversely affect the cathode ray tube into which the screen is incorporated. Suitable poisoning agents include metals such as iron, cobalt, and nickel. These agents may be provided in the form of salts thereof such as sulfates, chlorides, or nitrates.

In 1978, Tektronix received a patent that cited the above 1962 patent
Note the use of silica barrier layers, and zinc salts or oxides and manganese...to get ZnSiO4:Mn

I wonder if these kinds of things represented how they made the layers, and the phophors for these kinds of crt tubes, in the '60s

In '76 tektronix

this patent got refused or something. There's another bistable Tektronix patent from 1960 I think, that I'll post

Color Write Through Phosphor Material for Use in a Direct Viewing Storage Tube
Abstract
A colour write-through phosphor material for use in a direct viewing storage tube comprises non-store phosphor particles 66 having a barrier layer 68 and a bi-stable storage phosphor layer 64. The material is made by treating particles of Y2O2S/Y2O3/YVO4:Eu with silica to give the barrier layer, then with a zinc salt or oxide and manganese, and firing to form an outer coating of ZnSiO4:Mn.
